Italian Coursebooks with Audio: What to Check Before You Buy
An Italian coursebook with audio should give you native-speaker recordings for every dialogue, and ideally for every sentence, so you can listen before you read and repeat as often as you need; check how the audio is delivered (CD, download, app or in-page player) before you buy. Below we compare six books and how their audio works.
Why does an Italian coursebook need audio?
Because Italian spelling hides three things you must hear: stress, double consonants and question intonation.
- Stress. Spelling normally marks it only on a final vowel (città, perché). Ancora means "anchor" stressed on the first syllable and "still, again" stressed on the second.
- Double consonants. Nono (ninth) and nonno (grandfather), sete (thirst) and sette (seven) differ only by a held consonant.
- Intonation. Parli italiano. and Parli italiano? differ only in melody.
The CEFR self-assessment grid describes B1 listening as "I can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc."
How is the audio delivered: CD, download, app or online?
The format decides whether you can replay one sentence, study offline and keep your access.
| Format | Works offline | Replay one sentence | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio CD | Yes, with a drive | No, whole tracks | Many laptops have no drive |
| MP3 files (CD-ROM or download) | Yes | No, whole tracks | Keep a backup |
| QR codes in the book | No | No, whole tracks | Depends on the publisher's server |
| Publisher platform or app | Sometimes | Depends on the app | Codes can expire; you need an account |
| In-page player (book read online) | No | Yes, if each sentence has a button | Needs a connection; usually no download |
Access can run out: Edilingua's i-d-e-e code for Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 2 gives "free access for 18 months and 70 hours", and Alma licenses the interactive ebook of Nuovo Espresso 3 for 14 months from activation. Editions differ too: Teach Yourself's 2012 Complete Italian came with two MP3 CD-ROMs and a library app; the 2025 edition mentions an online programme.
Native-speaker recordings or synthetic voices: does it matter?
Yes, though less than many learners assume. Native speakers remain the best model of natural Italian; good synthetic voices let you hear any sentence on demand, but do not replace real people.
- Studio recordings carry natural rhythm, emotion and hesitation. They are expensive, so publishers rarely voice every example.
- Text-to-speech makes it affordable to voice every line, but it can misplace stress on words like ancora, stumble on names and numbers, and sound flat across a long scene.
Both are mainstream: Teach Yourself advertises conversations where you "hear native Italian speakers"; McGraw Hill sells Practice Makes Perfect "with an enhanced app featuring text-to-speech". Test any sample on ancora, a name, a number and a yes/no question.
Which Italian books with audio are worth considering?
Nuovo Espresso Plus 3 or Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 2 if you can study in Italian; Teach Yourself Complete Italian or DK's Italian in 3 Months for English-speaking beginners; Practice Makes Perfect for grammar with text-to-speech; and our Italiano B1. For grammars and readers, see our full comparison of Italian learning books.

Nuovo Espresso Plus 3 (Alma Edizioni)
Alma's updated edition of Nuovo Espresso for B1, sold with online audio and video or with an interactive ebook. Alma lists QR-code access to all the media, audio for the written texts as well as the listening tasks, and exercise solutions for registered users. The older Nuovo Espresso 3 is sold until stocks run out; its audio is a free download or a separate CD.
Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 2 (Edilingua)
By T. Marin, for B1–B2: eleven units plus an introductory one, video activities and QR codes for the audio. Mind the code's time limit if you study slowly or buy second-hand. Edilingua mentions self-assessment, not an answer key.
Complete Italian (Teach Yourself, 2025)
By Elena Borelli and Giulia Baronti, an English-language course placed at A1–B1, with "5+ hours of Authentic Conversations" by native speakers. The publisher does not say how the audio is accessed; check your copy's cover.
Italian in 3 Months with Free Audio App (DK)
A Hugo-series course in 12 weekly chapters for "a complete beginner or wanting to refresh your knowledge", with an audio app and an "imitated pronunciation" guide in English syllables. Use the guide on day one, then trust the app.
Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Italian Grammar, Premium Fourth Edition (McGraw Hill)
By Marcel Danesi, beginner to intermediate, with an answer key and a text-to-speech app. Pair this grammar workbook with a coursebook that has dialogues.
How does Italiano B1 handle audio?
Italiano B1 is our own book, and it puts the audio on the page: every sentence has a listen button, and each dialogue plays with its transcript, voiced by synthetic Italian voices, one per character.
- Voices. Text-to-speech, not studio recordings. Each character keeps one voice, lines carry acting directions (curious, a little shy, friendly), and scenes have background sound: a kitchen, a phone line, a street.
- Player. Play and pause, skip five seconds, speeds from 0.75× to 1.25×, loop, and a transcript to show or hide. Replay one line ten times without scrubbing.
- Exercises. Closed exercises are graded on the spot; each corrected answer gets a "Why?" note linking it to the grammar rule, in your language.
The limits: the voices are synthetic; you need a connection and cannot download the audio; it covers B1 only; and it is published Unità by Unità, with new pages added weekly. Unsure of your level? Read what a B1 course book should cover. Our post on how the book is built, Unità by Unità explains how the scenes are made.
Your own ear is the best test: Start Unità 1 free, no sign-up, and play the first dialogue. If the voices work for you, see pricing for the one-time purchase and the 14-day refund.
What should you check before buying a book with audio?
Seven checks before you pay:
- The exact edition. Audio formats vary by version, and new editions replace old ones, as Nuovo Espresso Plus 3 is replacing Nuovo Espresso 3.
- Where the audio lives, and for how long. Codes expire; a second-hand code may be used.
- Who is speaking. Native recordings or text-to-speech? Listen to a sample.
- Replay. Whole tracks or single sentences, at what speeds?
- Transcripts. You need them to check what you heard.
- What has audio. Dialogues only, or reading texts and exercises too?
- Offline use. Travelling? Choose files or an app that downloads.
Studying alone? Audio is only one thing a book must replace; our guide to learning without a teacher covers the rest.
How we chose
On 17 October 2026 we read each publisher's page (Alma Edizioni, Edilingua, Hachette for Teach Yourself, McGraw Hill) and, for DK, two booksellers' pages, recording only what they state: title, author, publisher, level, audio and voices. Where a page does not say who recorded the audio, the table says "not stated". We list Nuovo Espresso Plus 3 because Alma sells Nuovo Espresso 3 only until stocks run out. We left out audio-only courses, and Assimil's Italian for English speakers (no current listing found). We did not listen to every recording. Facts about Italiano B1 come from the book itself.
FAQ
Is a textbook with audio better than one without?
For understanding and speaking, yes: Italian spelling does not fully show stress, double consonants or intonation. A book without audio can still teach grammar and reading if you add a listening source.
Are native-speaker recordings better than text-to-speech?
Yes, as a model of natural Italian. Good synthetic voices are fine for replaying single sentences if they get stress and vowels right; test a sample first.
Can I still use an edition that comes with a CD?
Yes, if it matches your level. Copy the tracks to your phone, and check whether the publisher also offers a download, as Alma does for Nuovo Espresso 3.
Does online audio access expire?
Sometimes. Edilingua's i-d-e-e code lasts 18 months and 70 hours, and Alma's ebook licence for Nuovo Espresso 3 runs 14 months from activation, so read the terms before buying a used copy.
How should I use the audio in a coursebook?
Listen to each dialogue once without the text, then with the transcript, then replay single sentences and repeat them aloud. Once per unit, write a few sentences from dictation and check them.
Can I download the audio of Italiano B1?
No. The book is read online and the audio plays in the page. Unità 1 is free without sign-up, so you can hear the voices first.
