Why Unità 1 of Italiano B1 is free — and what the rest of the book looks like
Most Italian course books ask you to pay before you have turned a single page. We did the opposite: Unità 1 of Italiano B1 is free, with no account, no email and no time limit. Here is why, and what you will find when you keep going.
What a Unità looks like
Every Unità follows the same shape as a classic printed course book — because that structure works:
- Si parte! — you start by speaking and looking: a photo, a few questions, a short recording.
- Guardiamo da vicino — you read or listen, then work out the grammar yourself from examples.
- Dal vivo — a real-life situation: a phone call, a shop, a form to fill in.
- Mettiamoci alla prova — mixed practice and games.
- Parole in tasca, Scrivo e pronuncio — vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation.
- Grammatica — the two-column reference pages.
- Faccio il punto — the end-of-Unità test.
What makes it different from paper is what happens when you answer. Press Check and the page grades itself. Each corrected item opens a “Why?” note — the rule, in your own language, with the conjugation table if there is one — and the rule is added to your knowledge base so you can see what you have met so far.
Why the first Unità costs nothing
Three honest reasons:
- You should see the real thing. Screenshots don't show you whether an exercise feels fair or whether the audio is clear. Unità 1 is not a demo; it's the actual first Unità of the book.
- The book is still being written. New pages go live every week. Giving away the first Unità lets you judge the quality now, while buyers get every new Unità at no extra cost as it's published.
- It's good for learning. Many people need a nudge to start. A free Unità with no sign-up removes every excuse.
What buyers get
One payment unlocks the whole book: every Unità, the native-speaker audio, the exercises and explanations, and your progress — answers, scores, mistake notebook, notes — saved to your account and synced across up to 2 devices. There is no subscription and no renewal. If it isn't for you, write to us within 14 days and we refund in full.
How we make the audio
Dialogues are produced with Italian voices cast per character — Giulia has one voice, Tomás another, the chef in the background a third — with real ambient sound where the scene calls for it: a kitchen, a phone line, a street. Every sentence on the page also has a listen button, so you can hear a single line as often as you like.
